Should you wear Armbands

The question I get asked regarding armbands and swimming lessons. This is just my opinion. There are pros and cons to wearing armbands. They are just for keeping your child safe in and around water while been supervised. I don’t believe in teaching any child to swim with armbands on. I feel it just delays the progress that the swimmer can make without the armbands.

Pros

Develop early confidence – Great for boosting the water confidence of young children and giving them a sense of freedom in the pool.

Co-ordination can be enhanced and improved as a child’s arms and legs can be used independently

Cons

Swimmers can become dependant on armbands. Some children find it difficult to change to a different swimming aid and as a result, they lack progress.

They can restrict movement – The nature of how they are fitted on the arms, armband can be restrictive and may hinder arm movement, especially in smaller children.

May not provide enough buoyancy if used by adults. Ideally armbands are to be used by children.

If not fitted properly and not under supervision at all times, a child is in grave danger.

Hopefully you find this useful. To sum up, Yes armbands under supervision on holidays but weekly swimming lessons with a qualified swimming instructor is a no go.
